Today, videography has become one of the most valuable tools in my practice, not just for documenting cases, but for improving them, educating others, communicating with patients, and helping grow both my practice and my role as an educator. Over the past several years, I've come to realize that cameras don't just document dentistry, they improve it.
My appreciation for first-person videography began during a clinical mentorship, where my mentor used the FutuDent ProCam XS to record procedures from the operator's perspective. Rather than watching dentistry from the side of the operatory, I was seeing exactly what the clinician saw through the mirror. That viewpoint changed everything. Complex restorative techniques suddenly became much easier to understand because I wasn't simply observing a procedure, I was experiencing it through the clinician's eyes. It felt as though I was sitting in the operator's chair, learning every movement, every decision, and every subtle detail that simply can't be appreciated from a traditional side view. As soon as I flew back home, I placed an order for the same camera that Dr. Marshall Hanson used in his practice.
As my practice evolved toward minimally invasive smile design, visual documentation became even more important. My values center around the ABC philosophy, Alignment, Brightening, and Composite Bonding, to create conservative, predictable smile transformations. When working on anterior teeth, every detail is on display. Texture, translucency, line angles, emergence profile, and polish all influence how natural a restoration appears.
For many years, high-quality DSLR photography provided everything I needed to document and evaluate my work. However, as I began developing my own bonding techniques, including the OmniGap Protocol with omnibeads, I realized that still photographs could no longer capture every step. High-quality first-person videography allowed me to demonstrate movement, sequencing, and the subtle clinical details that make these techniques predictable and reproducible. It also gave me the opportunity to review every procedure, continually refine my protocols, and create educational content that helps other dentists appreciate the small details that often make the biggest difference in aesthetic dentistry. Reviewing these recordings together has also become a valuable teaching tool for my dental assistants. They gain a clearer understanding of the purpose behind each instrument, material, and clinical step, creating a more engaged team and a smoother workflow.
As opportunities to lecture grew, so did my interest in producing better educational content. Initially, I hired professional videographers to film and edit my lectures. Watching their work sparked another curiosity: what tools were professional content creators using? That search eventually led me to the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, a compact camera with AI subject tracking that follows me naturally as I move across the stage. It delivers professional-quality footage in a package that fits in my pocket, making it ideal for travelling between lectures and workshops without depending on a local production crew.
Photography is a daily essential in my operations. After completing DentLit photography training Dr. Miguel Ortiz, I implemented his workflow using a Nikon DSLR system with dedicated macro photography equipment and separate softbox lighting. I chose this setup because it produces softer, more natural illumination than a traditional ring flash while reducing the weight of the camera, making it more comfortable to use throughout a busy clinical day. The resulting images reveal remarkable detail, allowing us to evaluate smile design principles such as gingival architecture, tooth proportions, translucency, surface texture, and internal anatomy with exceptional clarity.
One aspect of my workflow is somewhat different from many practices: I take every patient's clinical photographs myself. While photography can certainly be delegated, I view those extra few minutes as part of the examination rather than simply documentation. During the smile consultation, I learn how comfortable a patient is, how they tolerate retraction, how they communicate, and often how anxious they may be about treatment. Those observations become part of my diagnosis and help guide treatment planning just as much as the photographs themselves.
Just as importantly, those few minutes help build trust. A smile transformation often represents a one- to three-year journey and a significant personal investment. Spending that time together at the very beginning allows patients to become comfortable with me long before we begin treatment. They see that I am personally involved from the initial records to the final polish, and that continuity creates a level of confidence that is difficult to measure but invaluable to the overall patient experience.
Photography and videography have also transformed how we communicate outside the operatory. While dentists naturally appreciate the fine details captured in clinical photographs, patients often connect more with video. A smile isn't static. As light moves naturally across the teeth during a short before-and-after video, patients can appreciate the harmony between the teeth, lips, and face in a way that still images alone cannot capture. Sharing these authentic transformations through social media has created a living portfolio of our work, allowing prospective patients to discover our philosophy, build rapport, and better understand what conservative cosmetic dentistry can achieve.
The future of visual technology in dentistry is even more exciting. Artificial intelligence is already helping create dynamic smile simulations from photographs and video, allowing patients to visualize potential outcomes on their own faces before treatment begins. Virtual monitoring is also changing orthodontic care. Patients can now submit smartphone scans of their aligner progress from home, allowing clinicians to assess tooth movement remotely and determine whether they are ready to progress to the next aligner or require additional time. The result is fewer unnecessary appointments, greater convenience, and more personalized care.
When I first experienced first-person videography during a mentorship, I thought I was simply learning a better way to perform a clinical procedure. Looking back, I was learning a different way to practice dentistry. Cameras have become far more than recording devices. They are tools for reflection, education, communication, mentorship, and innovation.
